What Mikey Thinks of Emo
“To me, ‘emo’ is a piece of [Censored]. It’s like hair metal or one of those crappy sub genres within sub genres that will just fizzle out, it’s a joke. Emo is really a genre of music within rock and roll, but to me emo means something different then what it has become.” Whats that I ask? “Well, emo to me is like Jimmy Eat World or Fallout Boy – its rock music but a bit more emotive and intelligent. Its not sad losers with oily black fringes wearing eyeliner whining about the state of things. It should be personal and introspective, but not desperate.”
Somewhat taken aback by these comments, I ask Mikey on how he thinks the bands image affects their fanbase and their categorisation into the emo genre. “Well, this is how we dress anyway – we have always dressed like this. But back in the day you know, it was called goth, then punk, now emo. It is just our clothes and we will probably look like this when we are 50. It's funny 'cause we were teased at school for wearing eyeliner and wearing black and dying our hair and now ‘emo’ has become this subculture, where if you don’t look like that, then you are excluded from it. I think it’s a piece of [Censored] to be honest.”
